Travel Tips

When traveling to Mexico, here are 10 useful tips:

  1. Do some research on where you plan to go. You may also want to choose the places you want to visit, but you don’t have to plan the entire itinerary right away.
  2. You can make reservations prior to leaving, although there are numerous places for lodging that you can easily find. In some beaches, you can even camp for free, and only pay a small fee for access to a bathroom.
  3. If you’re traveling by plane, try to get the best rates. Travel agencies sometimes offer travel packages, which already include discounted plane fares, lodging and tours.
  4. Some knowledge of Spanish is useful, but is not necessary. A lot of Mexican citizens can speak basic English, especially in the cities. It would be helpful though to learn basic phrases, such as “how much?” and “where is?”. You may also want to bring an English-Spanish dictionary.
  5. Pack only your essentials. Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes, as these are very valuable during tours. Bring a first aid kit and basic medications. If you’re going on a beach, remember to bring your beachwear, sunblock and protection for jellyfish stings.
  6. Don’t forget the necessary documents on your trip. These include passports, ID cards, tickets to and from Mexico, and receipts for your accommodation, among others.
  7. Make a budget. Thrifty people can typically get by on $25 a day. However, you should definitely be ready to spend a little more.
  8. Once you’re there, know the important places and contact numbers in the area, such as the police station and the hospital.
  9. Stay safe. Consciously check your belongings every time you go out. Also, avoid walking at night, especially if you’re alone. Stay in populated areas, and always have someone with you.
  10. Finally, and most importantly, don’t forget to have fun!
