Travel documents for Mexico
When traveling to Mexico, it is important to bring all the necessary documents to avoid getting into any hassle. Depending on your purpose for visiting and the length of your stay, different requirements may be asked of you.
One important requirement that you have to have on your travel to Mexico is a Mexico tourist card. It is a card given by the government that allows you to stay in Mexico as a tourist. The tourist card is valid for the next 180 days. You can get the tourist card at the border or at a Mexico consular office at several cities in the United States.
If you’re traveling to Mexico by car, you need to buy a tourist card, a temporary vehicle importation permit and, for your own safety, Mexican car insurance. You can usually get these cards at the US-Mexican border. To be able to get these cards, you will have to present proof of car ownership and registration, your driver’s license, an affidavit allowing temporary importation of your car, and proof of your citizenship. The tourist card costs $15, while the vehicle permit costs $15 via credit card or $30 via cash. Take note that some border areas allow you to pass without any of these requirements.
On the other hand, if you’re getting to Mexico by plane, you need to bring your passport and you have to buy a tourist card. Typically, the charge for the tourist card is incorporated in your airplane fare. The tourist card will be given to you on the plane, and it will be stamped at the airport before you leave. It is also important that you not forget to bring your plane ticket.
It is also advisable to bring identification cards, such as your driver’s license or birth certificate, when traveling.
