One of the most popular sports in Mexico is futbol, also known as soccer in other countries. The sport involves moving a ball towards a goal on one side of the field, while the opposing team tries to steal the ball and block it from reaching the goal.
Although Mexico has never won the World Cup Championship, the country’s team has reached the quarterfinal round of the competition twice. The current team is made up of 24 players.
The FIFA World Cup, or simply the World Cup, is an international soccer competition. FIFA, which stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association, is the international organization governing the sport. Since 1930, the World Cup championship has been given out every four years. The World Cup Final is the most watched sports event worldwide.
Mexico first hosted the World Cup competition in 1970. This was the first World Cup venue outside North America. The Brazil team, led by Pele and Carlo Alberto, won the competition. This was also the first year that Mexico was able to reach the quarterfinal round of the World Cup competition.
The second time Mexico hosted the World Cup competition was in 1986. The Argentine team, led by Diego Maradona, was crowned champion. Again, Mexico was able to reach the quarterfinal round during this year.
The second largest soccer stadium in Latin America, known as Estadio Azteca, can be found in Tlalpan, Mexico City. The stadium can seat approximately 105,000 individuals. Estadio Azteca, also known as Coloso de Santa Ursula, is the home of the national team of Mexico. The Estadio Azteca was where the 1970 and 1986 World Cup Finals were held. The 1968 Summer Olympics was also held at the stadium.
Tickets for minor games in Estadio Azteca can be bought outside of the stadium. For bigger games, it is recommended that you buy tickets approximately one week ahead of schedule. Ticket prices vary, starting from 50 pesos.
