Oaxaca city is the capital and largest city of the Oaxaca state. The formal name of Oaxaca city is Oaxaca de Juarez, a tribute to Benito Suarez who, the former president and national hero. It is located in the south-east portion of Mexico and enjoys a very pleasant climate as compared to other Mexican cities. Due to its rich cultural heritage and tradition, UNESCO declared Oaxaca a World Heritage site.

Tourists may be surprised by the large number of attractions that can be found in Oaxaca. At the center of the city is the Zocalo, a large square surrounded by stone archways. For those who are into churches and religious artifacts, there is the Catedral de Oaxaca (also known as the Cathedral of the Virgin of the Assumption) and the church and former monastery of St. John of God, Oaxaca’s oldest church.

If you're interested in culture and the arts, visit the Centro Cultural de San Domingo, which showcases Oaxacan life from pre-Columban days to the present, or the Casa de Juarez, a museum devoted to the life of Benito Juarez.

Nature lovers can enjoy the Ethnobotanical Garden, the Parque Benito Juarez and the Parque Communal de San Felipe. Oaxaca is also home to the Universidad Autonoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca as well as the Universidad de Mesoamerica.

Other interesting places that provide entertainment are the numerous pubs and bars that play live music.

Oaxaca is serviced by the Oaxaca-Xoxocotlan airport. There are different buses that will take you around Oaxaca with some even traveling as far as Puebla and Mexico City. There are also many taxi cabs that would be willing to take tourists to any destination within the city. Nevertheless, some people still prefer to travel by foot in order to take full advantage of the city’s old world charm.
