Staying Healthy in Mexico

Health
When traveling out of the country, it is important to know the common diseases you may encounter, in order to properly prevent illness and protect yourself.
The most common disease in Mexico is traveler’s diarrhea, which is also known as Moctezuma’s Revenge. It is usually caused by the intake of food or drink contaminated with viruses, bacteria or parasites. Symptoms of the disease include diarrhea and crampy stomach pain. It may also be accompanied by vomiting and fever.
To prevent this disease, make sure that the food you eat and the water you drink is clean. It is not advisable to eat street food, since you cannot be sure of the quality of the food and the way it was cooked. Try to steer clear of raw meat and fish, and make sure that the food you eat is well done. If possible, drink only purified water or have your drinking water boiled. Also, don’t forget to wash your hands regularly.
Other diseases that may be caused by intake of contaminated food and drinks include Hepatitis and Typhoid Fever. These diseases may be prevented by vaccination.
There are also certain places in Mexico that can put you at risk for acquiring malaria, which may be a life-threatening illness. These places include Campeche, Nayarit, Quintana Roo and Tabasco, among others. Malaria can be acquired from the bite of a specific mosquito and can result in a diverse assortment of symptoms, the most common of which is prolonged fever.
When traveling to these high-risk places, it is advisable to use insect repellants, especially during the day. You can also use various anti-mosquito measures, such as the use of mosquito nets and coils, and long-sleeved clothing. You may also take a specific medicine as prophylaxis prior to, during, and after your trip.
Other diseases that may be caused by mosquito bites include dengue fever, filariasis and trypanosomiasis. The same anti-mosquito measures can keep you safe from these diseases.
If you get sick during or immediately after your stay in a foreign country, consult a physician immediately.
