The country of Mexico lies in the southern area of the continent of North America. It is bordered by the United States to the north, and to the south lie Guatemala and Belize.
Three bodies of water also surround its shores, namely the Sea of Cortez, the Carribean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Mexico’s territory also extends to include several islands located in these bodies of water. Examples of these islands include the Guadalupe Islad in the Pacific Ocean. These areas provide wonderful beaches that travelers love to visit.
The total land area of Mexico is almost 2 million square kilometers. It is ranked number 14 in the world in total area, and ranks number 5 in the Americas.
The territory of Mexico contains several mountain ranges. These include the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Sierra Madre Oriental, the Sierra Nevada and the Sierra Madre del Sur. The highest peaks in the country can be found in the Sierra Nevada, specifically the Pico de Orizaba.
Between these mountain ranges are valleys with progressive cities, such as Mexico City and Puebla.
Mexico is divided into several regions. These include Northern Mexico, which are the states nearest to the US-Mexico Border; Central Mexico, which is in the area of the capital; the Pacific Coast, which is composed of a number of beach resorts in the southern area; Baja California, which is a peninsula in the western region; and the Yucatan Peninsula, which is composed of jungles and tropical rainforests.
The country of Mexico is made up of 31 states. Many cities in Mexico are known throughout the world, such as Mexico City, Guanajato, Acapulco and Cancun. The capital of the country is Mexico City, which is also the largest city in Mexico, and one of the largest in the world.
