Cancun is a coastal city belonging to the state of Quintana Roo and is a world famous tourist resort destination. It is characterized by its modern beachfront hotels and exhilarating nightlife. It is divided into two major areas: Cancun Island and Cancun City. The well-known Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) and Tourist Zone (Zona Turistica) are located in Cancun Island. On the other hand, the Cancun International Airport and Downtown Cancun are both located in Cancun City.

White sand beaches and turquoise blue waters are what usually comes to mind when one conjures up images of Cancun, and unmistakably so. However, Cancun is not just about golden sunsets and beautiful beaches. It is also rich in Mexican culture and tradition and a lot of other significant tourist attractions are present in the area. There are hundreds of ancient Mayan archaeological ruins that is a testament to the profound Mayan influence on the city. There are organized tours that showcase breathtaking lagoons, mangroves, jungles and eco-friendly reserve areas. Further into the mainland, there is a downtown commercial area filled with shops, restaurants and other commercial establishments.

Other tourist attractions that have appeared in more recent times include the La Isla entertainment complex, a floating casino, a modern, state-of-the-art Convention Center, and a new water park. Downtown Cancun shows you a different face of the city. There are a lot of restaurants, bars and shopping places to go to and the vibe here is much more relaxed and homey.

It takes two hours to fly by air from Mexico City to Cancun. Cancun is serviced by the Cancun International Airport. There are shuttle vans and car rental services that are available for tourists who are arriving at the airport. There are also local buses and taxi cabs that make it easier for tourists to further explore this beautiful little city.
