Mexican Archaeology Sites

Tenochtitlan or Mexico-Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec empire
Mexico has a deep history that can be traced using various archaeological parks and sites. These archaeological sites are typically composed of various structures, such as pyramids, temples and ancient cities.
There are basically four cultural zones where these famous Mexican archaeological sites can be found. These cultural zones are Aztec, Maya, Mixtec-Zapotec and Huastec-Olmec.
The Aztec cultural zone includes sites such as Teotihuacan, Tula, Tenochtitlan, Templo Mayor and Cholula. The Maya cultural zone includes sites such as Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Paleque, Coba and Tulum. The Mixtec-Zapotec cultural zone includes sites such as Mitla, Monte Alban and Punta Celeste. Finally, the Huastec-Olmec cultural zone includes sites such as El Tajin, La Venta and Comalcalco.
Before going to ay of the sites, it is a good idea to fid out the park’s schedule first. Most of the archaeology parks in Mexico are open daily, beginning around 8-9 in the morning. They usually close around 5 in the afternoon. Some sites are closed on Mondays.
There is usually an entrance fee to the parks, which can range from 30-130 pesos. The fee is used to promote the study of these sites and support further excavations of Mexican sites. Children and the elderly can generally enter for free. Mexican citizens may also enter free of charge.
Wear comfortable clothes when touring the archaeology parks. The weather can become hot in Mexico; thus, wearing light clothes is advisable. Since you will be walking around huge structures, a comfortable pair of shoes is recommended. Also, since some sites are located in the jungle, you may want to put on insect repellant.
If you’re bringing a video or a still camera, make sure you have the appropriate permits or pay the necessary fees prior to using them.
Once you’re at the park, find a guide that speaks your language. Prices vary, but are generally reasonable. Set the price for the tour before you start. Other than giving a comprehensive tour, excellent tour guides can also teach you the rich histories of the various sites.
